New Splash Pad Coming to Pelham City Park

Making a SplashPelham will soon have a fun, interactive, and accessible way to beat the Alabama heat. Construction on a new splash pad will begin soon, and it is a community feature Pelham residents have wanted for a long time. The splash pad will be built on the Pelham City Park campus.The splash pad was approved as a part of the Fiscal Year 2023 Capital Projects budget. At the City Council meeting on March 7, 2023, council members approved a purchase and installation agreement between the City and local supplier Struthers Recreation, LLC, which is an exclusive representative of Fort Payne-based GameTime, a Playcore company. The total amount of the contract is $345,675. The splash pad is part of a larger project on the Pelham City Park campus. As Brian Cooper, Director of Pelham Parks and Recreation explained, “The splash pad continues the expansion of the northern end of the Pelham City Park campus. It is another reason, along with the dog park, to make that end of the park a destination. We’ll also add a new restroom in the area, as well as lighting for the dog park.” He said future expansion of this portion of City Park will include a new playground in early 2024.Cooper said site work for the splash pad will begin in the coming weeks. “The lead time on the delivery of the splash pad is three months,” he added. Cooper said the splash pad will open in the early summer of this year.The aquatic play experience will feature many different items to thrill people of all ages. A review of the list of water features includes the Baby Long Legs, with outward-arching streams of water; the Lotus Petal which will create a weave pattern that is fun to run through; the Mushroom Maze which creates a dome of water. If you’re inside the dome, the sound is amplified as if you’re in a cave. Other features are geared toward smaller children, like the Water Flower. It will have a 360-degree sheet of water that is especially appealing to toddlers. The splash pad will also be accessible to those with disabilities.Splash Pads are an additional way to bring communities together and create a natural gathering space. Cooper believes it will add to the overall aesthetic of the city. “Pelham takes great pride in our ability to offer and deliver world-class recreation opportunities. We continue to gauge what our citizens desire and try to bring those amenities to reality. This has been a long time coming,” he said.
